I was looking for some information on HeNe laser tube as I am repairing one of our laser guns in the Physics department.I have good practical experience in handling Industrial electronics. But laser is new. So I could repaire it.It has a 1400V transformer and a DC multiplier circuit.Only problem is the Capacitors are not available here.Ordinary electrolytic ones are not working properly.

The "Tinkers Guild" appears to be defunct. My interest at the moment is how to handle either repair or 'otherwise' utilize a Spectra Physics 124B/SP255 system that has come into my hands. Treating it like a special light bulb, I have ascertained that it does not currently function. Fortunately, I did not blind myself or cause an explosion, a snap-crackle-pop, or otherwise make things worse in the attempt. The rating is 35mW, so I wonder if self-repair can ever recover that rating. I have a colleague in chemistry who specializes in surface science, and he can probably use the thing once it is revitalized. Thanks for the site.

I'm wandering if it is possible to me build a visible CW laser at home... i found a lot of informations on google, and in your site, however vacuum, gas, mirrors are difficult to find\produce, expecially in italy. Do u know a place where i can find more technical (not theoretical) informations and where i can find material to build something? It's very hard to find things for an hobbiest!!! Thanks a lot for the knoweledge u share with the world.

Just clicked your link because of idea investigation . My sewing needle broke and was wondering whether a laser could cut a new eye . Being caste , the laser would have to be powerful even though the scale is small . I was also wondering whether a laser could cut dove joints in the wires of electronic components and then people could just insert the components together . Does the size of the lazer line matter in cuting ? Logic says cutting with a 0.0001 width still haves the material .

How are they used in operations? Are they safe? Are lasers expensive? Are they east to operate? How are they used in warfare? How do you think they will advance warfare? Is their size convenient for every-day use? How else are lasers used? How do you think lasers will change? Thank you, Matt Swoveland If you could send a short biography of yourself and a picture I would greatly appreciate that, thank you. please e-mail me if you have a response thanks

Hello, I am a junior at Butler Univeristy. I am taking a special topics course on laser spectroscopy and applications. We're trying to build a nitrogen laser from scratch. We're having some trouble though. The high and low voltage pieces all work and we are getting a spark from the spark gap. However, we're not getting any lasing. I was wondering if you had any tips on where to look for the problem. Thanks!

(sounds almost like a star trek phaser gun, lol) would like some feedback. Great site =)

I've built 4 N2 lasers (0.5, 0.67, 1.0 and 1.5M) and can confirm all N2 observations here, in fact this is the first time ive seen a discussion of the air (but NOT N2) phenominon of the jittery wedge shaped beam profile. Most recent is a 1.5 Meter 4 electrode monster that can get up to 60hz easily (neon xformers- gotta love 'em!). Will see if i can get some Neon and light it up- my rise time is reasonably fast (polypropylene dielectric has some K and breakdown advantages, as well we use flat strip spark gap to minimize L).

Here is a link to my web page which contains a description and photos of a decent TEA Nitrogen laser that I built in my garage using easy-to-get materials. It is similar to Gary Dauzart's (in fact, he signed my guestbook too a while back). The only tips I would add to what I have already seen in your's and Gary's descriptions is: 1. Try a used neon sign transformer (12 KV @ 30mA) and a couple of high voltage diodes to build a simple half-wave rectified power supply. It is probably overkill, but it will deliver much higher firing rates than the TV flyback circuit, and is a lot simpler to build. 2. I found that the best way to adjust the electrode spacing is to start with them a little too close together and as parrallel as possible. Then use a nylon TV tuning tool (the end that looks like a flat blade screwdriver) to adjust the gap to get rid of hot-spots and to optimize performance.

Thanks for your help in printing your web pages in BLACK ink. Mike I changed the settings on the printer and it came out the way it should. This will be a great help in teaching my students about lasers. Thanks again for your response to my phone call.

This page is the best that I have yet seen on the net that deals with home laser constuction but I would like to see a little more plans for CO2 lasers in the future. I just wish that I found this site sooner before I blew five laser diodes in my experimenting with them.

Nice resource. It looks like I might get something around here to work, as if I wasen't busy enough. That YAG head I've staring at all these years is more popular than I thought.

Thank you for your insight on Lasers. I'm currently working on a simple project that will convert a 3 volt battery operated laser pointer to use a 5 volt DC power supply. I was looking for safety criteria for laser when I stummbled on to your page. Your page helped me better prepare for the project at hand. Thank You.

I like your nitrogen and dye laser pages. This is where my interests lie. I plan on building an N2 laser to pump a small dye cell and will let you know how it goes as soon as I am finished. I will also get my web site up and put the results there. Nice site!

Nice page! I'm planning on building another CO2 laser like the one I built in high school for the science fair. This time I can afford end windows which are more durable than the sodium chloride ones (from Harschaw Laboratories, if memory serves) which I used the first time. I'm still looking for about 80 watts from a 1 meter tube. As I recall, Brewster's angle for CO2 is 57.0022949 degrees. And Plank's constant should be 6.62517x10-27 erg/seconds. Thanks for bringing back the memories!

This page rocks! Hopefully the Nd:YAG section will continue to be updated with news and experimental notes, because I'll be referring to it when I finish collecting pieces for my own Ruby/YAG laser and begin it's construction. I just wish I could find a surplus head like that one! :-)

Hi there! Cool to meet a fellow Gadgeteer. I tinker with lasers too and am currently studying at Northcentral Technical Tech college to be a laser technician. Wish I could of found you sooner before you blew-up the Kr arc lamp. Oh well. I got a suggestion on using air flashlamps to pump your YAG why not fill the cavity with a downshifting dye that flouresces in the I.R.? This may give good results. Would you know anywhere to get one of those ruby lasers that was offered by Halted Specialties a while back? This is a very cool site like it a lot! Sincerely, Chris Ps. I got a few larger flashlamps they have a 4" arc (around 6" toatal length) and a 9mm diameter If you can use em let me know. :-)

An excellent web page for the amature laser constructor, or even someone who is just thinking of getting their feet wet and wanting to build lasers. As for myself, I'm still on a quest to find any info about the Canadian, built (oxygen laser). The journal: Review of Scientific Instruments, it is said featured an extensive write up about this laser aprox. back in 1987. Any help in pinning down this article, would be greatly appreciated. As for now, I'm doing some basic experimenting with my own, (oxygen laser) but have not succeded (yet) in getting it to lase. Daniel Ames
