This easy method was impossible to find on the web and so is presented here for your enjoyment. Why would one wish to alter the serial number of an application that has already been installed, you ask?
Without a volume license code for FCP 4 edit suites, it is difficult to install many sets of software on identical machines and maintain individual identities for each. Serial numbers, computer names and other identifiers need to be changed if the machines are to be used on a network.
Look on your Mac OS X system drive for the Library
folder. Navigate this
folder along this route: ->
Library/Application Support/ProApps/ until you find the file entitled
Final Cut Pro System ID
. Right-click (with your two-button mouse… you
are using a two-button mouse, finally, right?) on the file and choose to Open With
the TextEdit application. You will see the serial number inside the file
where you can edit, save the changes, then move on to the next machine with the
confidence that the serial number is now unique. An image of what the file looks like
is shown here.
Any x
in the serial number string—which is the first string after
the 16-4
key—represents a letter while an n
represents
a numeral.
