Mark, Had a delightful time browsing various parts of your Web site. I was born early in 1936, before miniature tubes came on the market. I'm so glad to read of your many successes, and the other kind, from which we learn (or should). I built a radio at age 6, and carelessly/accidentally connected the B battery to the filament circuit. The short-circuit current of a good 90-V B battery will burn out 1.4-V heaters before your reaction time makes you disconnect. Had better luck, later, with a 6-tube Meissner kit. I built the Popular Science "Cigar Box Tesla Coil" (ca. 1952) as a high school shop project. Was quite a nice job, physically, but when powered up, the top terminal didn't have a spark to a handheld screwdriver blade. What the article omitted was some essential info. that I didn't know at the time: The tall secondary has to have a self-resonant frequency close to that of the primary RF. There was too much of a frequency mismatch, and no variable capacitor to tune the (tube) oscillator. Won Hon. Mention in the Westinghouse National Science Talent Search in high school; probably helped me to get accepted at Princeton. Lasted for one term, and spent many decades figuring out what went wrong. Enlisted in the Navy, and became a fire control tech. Was fascinated by the Mk.1A mechanical #$*!%og f.c. computer; at long last, docs are appearing online. in 1960, I was a midnight hacker on the Display Info. Processor at the NORAD COC in Colo. Springs (before it went under the mountain). The DIP (19-bit word length; afaik, unique) was ready to go a few weeks ahead of schedule. Yrs trly asked permission to learn it better after hours, and that was OK with RCA Service Company and NORAD. Only proviso was that I had to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed next morning. Hop et ask the USAF for permission to write up the machine. Around 1963, I think, I became one of the first eight (afaik!) electronic desktop calculator techs in the USA, on the Friden EC-130. Remarkably-ingenious architecture which I wrote up years ago; it's on several calc. sites. Was a non-degreed engineer at Friden R&D in Rochester, but I was politically naive. Was involved with Moog and Arp synth. hardware starting right after W. Carlos' Switched-on Bach came out; hearing it was a profound and happy experience. Taught synth. at the New School in NYC to anyone interested for a spell. Left the field when polyphonics were starting to come on the market. I think you'd be interested in the old #$*!%og fire-control computers. The mechanical schematic for the Mk. 1/1A is roughly two feet high and maybe 5 feet wide (rough estimates, no fish story). It contains about 160 miter-gear differentials -- that gives some idea of its complexity. Although I've always had some interest in mechanical calculators, a few years ago the Web started to have considerable technical detail, and I have been repeatedly delighted to learn about them. By now, I think I know just about all the basic mechanisms, and they are interesting. (How about a mechanical "ROM" for a fast multiplier?) I have just a few. They are notably interesting, especially the Marchant, an awesomely sophisticated design that was twice as fast as any other until (probably) the last of the Monroes, a printer. The Marchant has a full keyboard, usually ten columns. Every column has a nine-ratio preselector "transmission" so that the speed of that column's dial in the carriage is proportional to the number keyed in. The 20-digit accumulator contains 39 spur-gear differentials. (Oodles of gears!) Quite remarkable is that it contains a multi-digit mechanical /#$*!%og/ magnitude comparator to speed up division. (It anticipates overdraft, and afaik avoids it when properly adjusted.) Simplicity is not one of its strong points. See John Wolff's pages: That green one, top middle, is a Marchant. the one to its right must be a Friden EC-132, which does square root using a clever algorithm. John has several splendid teardown/rebuild photo series of a number of machines (incl. a Marchant); these are absolute must-see; time sink warning! The IBM Selectric typewriter is notable for having a lot of mechanical binary mechanism internally. The ball is positioned by two mechanical digital-to-#$*!%og converters. As you probably realize, the typewriter is entirely mechanical, save for the drive motor. I was also a Flexowriter mechanic, just enough to have a legit. claim. I'd commend to your attention Brian Conlon's Web site about the Australian electromechanical race track totalisators. In one installation, iirc, the whole system was handling, at peak betting sales, 250,000 real-time financial transactions per minute. No electronics at all. In a sense, the systems were huge 3-D structures built of smaller units, all interconnected. Time sink warning! I've also taught myself a bit of horology; as a kid, friends and neighbors gave me clocks and watches that didn't work. Along the way, I bought a complete Amiga 1000 system, which i still have, and want to give away. It's early enough not to have Extra Halfbrite. Have maybe 150 lb. of docs and magazines. Printer is a Seikosha MP-1300AI, selectable charset; was one of the first to have ISO 8859-1 internally. Pretty sure it's a 9-pin variety. Does color, but the ink colorimetry is horrible. I also have the Sony KV-1311 TV/monitor; it's still in fine condition, because I don't watch TV. Would be glad to see it in a good home. For many years, I have been a member of the CALCLIST-L at Technion in Israel; a new list has been established, and is doing well. I've written for both lists. However, my first love among mailing lists is Howthingswork@yahoogroups.com, where I've written rather extensively no the history of technology; in recent years, I've put the word "histech" into the Subject field if there is anything significant in the message. I also have supplemented a number of articles in Wikipedia (and even rewritten parts of some). I take a slightly perverse pleasure in copy editing. My father was a steam engine enthusiast; when I was a toddler, we visited the Boston sewage pumping station and the Chestnut Hill city water pumping station; both had steam engines running. As well, I can remember, alos asa toddler, watching a steam shovel (unsophisticated geometry!) excavating. At home, we had a couple of Weeden engine/boilers, which I enjoyed. My father was a Reg'd. Prof. Engineer (mechanical) in NY state; he worked for G.E. via a subcontractor on power station design; did piping layouts, because he had an exceptional 3-D sense. He brought home advertiser-supported periodicals for me, and sent in bingo cards, returns from which I learned quite a bit. One day, I was perusing a new-products tabloid-format monthly, and there was a small item with a really-interesting headline that said a coherent visible light source was now available. From studying the MIT Radiation Lab. Series in high school, I knew "coherent" was something significant. (It was a Hughes ruby laser. The b&w photo showed a helical flashtube with a transparent shiny rod in the center, supports air-brushed out.) Best regards, indeed; I surely hope to return and browse further, and would be glad to correspond by e-mail. Plainly, we have a common interest in the history of technology.

Hey Prof... Gotta love these 'internets' and... the generous souls who share with us their passions which finds us stuff never before -ever - remotely findable. So - On discovering a working speaker in my little -long since 'relegated'- 1970s metronome kit and thinking to convert it to an 8 ohm audio amp and drawing out a schematic BUT having no idea of that which actually composed any sort of (preferably transformered) amp: I went looking and found your lovely contribution(s) which proved so informative (and cool). But then came to wonder then if you've a schematic for an modest little amp which might reuse as many of the metronome parts as possible? [for the sake of frugality if nothing else]. Did copy off the 'OTL' amp info but of course IT abjures any transformer. My own background was 6613~Avionics in the Marines where we worked on the first fire-control processors for the F3D night-fighter (and ended up in Medicine)..but never lost an interest in these basic electronics and the magical things they can do. Thanks so very much...this was total fun! cheers James T MD/MT

I was an executive with MA/Com when they acquired OS and quickly managed into the ground. An amusing story in itself, but as part of the staff there, we acquired a Challenger II 4P and a box of floppy discs with all sorts of applications from accounting to games. I have kept these items in my possession since then (around 1981) but thought they might be of some value to a collector as an antique item. My hobby is barbershop quartet and collecting old cars starting with a 1959 Jag XK-150 Open Two Seater (OTS). Any idea of how to sell these items off or their value? Thanks, Pete Peter M. Hi Mark, I just found yor page on CROR signalling. Very useful! I am currently building a virutal prottype railroad and it is very handy to understand signalling. You may be interested to know that last month while on the VIA transcontinental that I disocevered a new signal on the CN Main Line. Prior to reaching a siding, there would be an Advanced Clear to Stop. But there was also below it a flashing green arrow (just like at a street intersection). On my scanner, I heard the engineer call out "Advanced Clear to Stop - Take Siding Right" or something similar. I thought you would be interested. Cheers, Pat

Mark, Thanks for sharing. Although, I'm interested in detecting electrostatic fields at present ( vector, range, character, etc. ) I view your site as a treasure reading about your Science Fair experiences and more. My junior high school days were more about developing rockets - learn, make, mistake, test, fail, learn more driven by the interest of results and making plain how it works. Later, early in high school did electronics kits, and making new things like [ homeostatic feedback staging ] - a seven stage #$*!%og loop feedback controller, binary JK Flip-Flops, then my sporatic interest in Science Fairs kick in. I won a few being more interested in building circuits to transmit, receive, test, and basically learn electronics. I think its great you generously share your projects. I haven't explored your temperature alarm circuit but will probably develop a controller for a water solar heat collector I am building using copper pipe, some fins, and putting it into a 4 by 8 foot plywood box covered in polycarbonate plastic to keep it warm. After I add an electric pump, one way valve, and some temperature recording and control to it, the practical tests begin. The project pays for itself and is not all that complex.

This kit was similar to the P-Boxs but used springs to attach the wires to the components. I still have it....somewhere. That's about it for now. Hi! I enjoyed seeing your OSI pages, it was tough for my Dad and me to throw away ours years ago, and I just checked and found that I still have the binder with the character graphics manual! I wanted to use the "airplane" characters as an avatar for something; had I not had it I'd have stolen your gif file instead. Best, Elaine

Love your PDP 11/34 page! Used one in 1979-1980 at my (well-funded) high school. I created password stealing programs and was "kicked off the system" for months at a clip. Still remember that ZIP program and the DELETE command. Kids hated me for deleting their entire accounts! I was bad. I was very good at BASIC programming as well. I have a BS in Physics but consider myself to really be an engineer. Wrote operating systgem code, drivers, data com, for a mini computer manufactuer then midlife crisis, now a Dentist. I too had (still have) a OSI superboard II. I just broke it out and it still works. I loved this machine in the late 70's. I made some interesting modifications. I designed a simple mod (Two TTL chips and 4 cut traces)which doubled the video display to 64 characters per line with only 16 lines per screen by doubling the character clock and stealing (interlacing)bytes from the line below and using a free running faster dot clock. Characters look much better and much easier to read due to the space between lines of character. Included a very short code sequence to handle it transparently to software including backspace. Even designed it so one can programtically turn it on or off by turning on a bit in the last byte of the video memory (needs an extra latch chip for this). Also wrote a very short code sequence which kept a digital clock readout at the end of the video display. used the 60 hz vertical synce signal to cause an interrupt. the interrupt code actually did the arithmetic in ascii on the display Ram itself. I just loved the way one could turn on these old machines and write some code in "simple" basic and get an answer. The original idea of basic was to allow one to very simply write a program. By the way, the basic in the Ohio Scientific Machines is MicroSoft Basic....interesting! I also love the pic chips and like to make all kinds of little electronic projects.

Dear Sir, you have opened a wonderful way for me to study the programming of your nice builded temperature controler with the PIC 16F84. I'v build it with your code and my changes to make it running on a 16F877 PIC processor. I was a hard work, but now it's finished. Thank you so much for your really good commented program. I'v learned so much that my books cannot compare which I'v read before. sincerely Peter Geisler / Germany / old student with age of 64 :-)

Dear Sir! You wrote: “The water pump which this engine drove was two-stage. One stage of a pump of this kind can only be used to lift water 32 feet so two pumps are used here to allow water to be lifted up to 64 feet from the bottom of a mine” (http://inventors.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://technology.niagarac.on.ca/people/mcsele/newcomen.htm ) I don’t believe. Because earlier you have written: “I was told by a visitor to this site (Richard Holliday), who lives in the area, that the mine was about 200 feet deep” 64-feet water pumps can’t work in 200-feet mine! Can you describe a design of the water pump more in detail? It would be desirable to specify its sizes and characteristics. And also to describe or give figures of valves (of these pumps). Yours sincerely, Peter Dubrovsky, St.-Petersburg, Russia. d-pi@yandex.ru

After completing the programs I used them to do the work of a secretary (who wanted to retire). Part of her work took three weeks each month. The computer did it all in an hour!!!! Still have a few disks (5 1/4) and would like to read them, but the c4p is long gone. If you have time, I would like to correspond with you.

Hi Prof, stumbled into your page looking for information about lasers and enjoyed the complete homepage. Like a good book : Once you started reading it, you can't stop. Personally, I don't like the sounds of the 80's so much, but that's a matter of taste. I just wanted to comment the "B-Sides" - chapter. I'm not sure what is worse than "seasons in the sun", but it surely belongs into the Top Ten. Do you know the original ? It was written by singer/songwriter Jaques Brel from Belgium in '61, and if you have the chance to hear it or see him perform the song, you will see it in a different light. Of course, it's in French .... Forgot to say it's called "Le maribond" What they did to this song is what top guitarist Leo Kottke described as :"Using one of my favorite techniques: Taking a simple little melody and drive it into the ground !" We are experimenting with amateur radio via laser, and I'm glad that we could establish our first contact over 10 km with laser pointer diodes. Only problems were warm air bubbles, insects in the beam and mechanical alignment. If the beam hit, the S-meter went , so the next test should be at least at a distance of 20 km. I never expected that result. Best 73 from Germany Horst DK3BM

Hi There I noticed that the connections from the ADC to the PIC the CLK and DAT are swapped around looking at the Assembler code. Unless I am fast asleep. After having swapped them I can speak to the ADC but by dropping the input voltage to the ADC the PWM wave jumps from narrow to wide instantly at the threshold. I sm into the design of power inverters ihave been able to design up to 7kva inverters on the square wave principles using sg3524n but i want to inprove on these by learnign to design modified squarewave which can be achieved by using the same ic but i don have the knowledge of how to design fillters, how to overcome crossover distortion in the driver section and ohters that might be needed to achieve this

Came across your site doing a google search of "ohio scientific". I too had a C1P supper board in the late 70's. Only micro I could afford which had keyboard and everthing included. I made a few modifications which are very interesting. I too have dug my board out of storage and am playing around with it when I have time. My best modification was to double the characters accross the screen by interspersing characters from the line below. The result is very readable characters (better the original) with nice space between line in the vertical directions. Essentialy gives you a 50 by 15 display. 15 lines of 50 characters each. If I get a chance I'll try to get some pics of it. It is a very simple modification requiring 4 cuts traces and I even made it programble from software. I really should have sold this during the heyday. A simple hand coded piece of software is loaded in unused high memory and intercepts the output code and correctly displays all output. I eventually got a baudot teletype (55 baud) and used it for output (used a little ascii to baudot routine and bit banged it out the keyboard port). I wrote a 6502 disassembler is basic which I used to view the code in the roms. I also talked to some guys at OSI who described some of the rom routines and where to get and put parameters they required. This allowed me to write some interesing programs. I also picked off the vertical sync signal and fed it in as an interupt which was used to run a clock which kept time in ascii in the video ram. Another piece of pretty cool code. I wanted to build an expansion bus to a 44 pin backplane but never quite go around to finish it. A later addition wasa recieve only teletype (the one that uses the bouncing palete) using ascii at 150 baud. At the time, I was working for a minicomputer manufacturer (InterData later becoming Perkin Elmer). I then went to dental school and haven't done much since. I think the 6502 was a great little chip and now want to build some machines and have reactivated my OSI board. I have lots of OSI literature if you are interested.

Hello Mark, Congratulations and thanks for the great site. I was quite amused by the kifli recipe. My background is Hungarian and I should know how to make kifli but I dont kow everyting!:) Your diagram was most helpful to explain to me how best to do the rolled up kifli. I was looking for the crescent shaped kifli that is simpler to make. I am usually reluctant to leave a note in anyone's guest book but I feel quite reassured that I wont get spams from your site. Hello Prof Mark, Your articles are great! I specially like your web page re: Telephone Switches. Having worked as PABX technician for 17 years back home in the Philippines during the early 80's, I maintained several Automatic Electric Type 301 PABX systems that uses Strowger switches similar to step by step CO. I guess it's nostalgia but it is an eye opener for Telecom students who may never see an actual Strowger system that gave birth to automatic telephone calls. Best regards, Vic

Mark, I stumbled onto your web site after trying to find out what happened to the Olson Electronic store in Cleveland Ohio. Sadly, I think it is now defunct. Your childhood science interests seem to mimic my own - We both loved building science projects and tried to bridge the world between electronics and physics, I ended up getting my Ph.D. in theoretical physics, but I never stopped building gadgets. This makes me an odd sort of theorist. But I like it that way. I am now a self-employed consultant working on a wide array of technologies from MEMS devices to aerospace probes. I envy you with your university job. These are hard to come by. Anyway, I read through much of your web site and found resonance everywhere. I agree that electronics and hardware-based science projects have given way to software and video games. I have always noticed that the best applied engineers are those who had some type background in physics and played around with science projects and did experiments as kids. If fewer and fewer kids are tinkering - will the world end up running on poorly developed software? At least I'll always have a job! I ramble; anyway, I really did enjoy visiting your web site and want to thank you for the nostalgic trip back to my own past! - Chuck

hello porf. mark looking for some project, which should be done at the 'rudolf-diesel-technikerschule' in augsburg/germany we found your site and are still amazed, about what is possible to make with almost 'no-cost' in laserphysics. I bulit a 2mW HeNe- laser some years ago using a spectra-physics tube ane a homemade regultated powersupply from 12Vdc. it still works well, and I use this for party-decoration, while sending the laserbeam through a profiled slow turning tile of glass. the interferences are quite pretty. but the lasers shown on your homepage are the 'real stuff'. I will start to collect some required meaterials immediately, and try to build a TEA nitrogen type laser. I have some experience withe plasma ane welding arcs, and balls enough to build a high voltage supply, stolen from an color TV or VGA-monitor. so its you dear prof. mark, who infects an welding specialist and one technician with the 'laser-homebrew-virus'. lot of thanks for this :-) - sience is cool. best wishes from south of germany. markus Hölzl / DG5MdB

Thank you lord for your site, Ive been hunting through forums and websites for a simple answer I found about dpss pointers from your detailed info. If you have time maybee you could read about a hurdle ive encountered...Ok I have a leadlight 105 and on my quest to achieve a super bright beam that would burn things finally worked out and after alignment, potmod, and resistor replacement I got 65mw at a stable 440ma. And unit never to produce any significant heat. I was happy as hell to get this out of a pointer but it only lasted for about a day. Just yesterday I took my pointer apart to fix my button because I couldnt use the black plastic shroud that hold the circuit board stable because I used the big resistors with the leads on each end. Anyway I noticed the circuit board was slanted down alittle from pushing on the button too hard so I pushed it back up very lightly and the circuitboard just gave as if the diode legs snapped. I pushed the circuitboard back down straight and checked everything out and it seems everything was ok. So I loosened the lock ring to check the diode out, I got the circuit board off and sat it on the table and then dropped the brass tube on the floor. I found 1 brass shroud that goes over diode and 1 lense with brass ring around it. Ok so I checked were the diode legs attach to the diode and everything seemed fine so I put everything back together and tried it out. And it was only a very dim dot. So after flipping the lense 5-6 different times I still cant get a good beam. I read on here somewhere the concave part goes towards the diode so I took it apart and cleans all lenses with alcohol and made sure concave part was facing diode. Now after assembling again I only get 15mw compared to 65mw it did have. I tried cleaning everything again, aligning the diode, adjusting the pot but cant get anything close to my 65mw. Is there a lense or something missing? The brass tube with IR filter on it has a lense built into it that I can see when looking in the tube, then ontop of it I put the lense with brass ring, then the diode with brass shroud over it. Is there something I lost? I thought maybee the diode legs were presure fitted inside the diode and it came loose so when its all together and I push the button down I wigled the board up and down but it doesnt help. Also I get alot of artifacts. And another strange thing is I took the 220 ohm resistor off and it still works the same. I checked current draw and its close to 400ma (originally 440ma) but I just aint getting nothing for power. Damn it I just want my original 65mw back and ill stop messing with it. Anyone know if im missing a lense or something? Or anything I can do to get my pointer working good again? PLEASE HELP!!!thanks

Enjoyed your site. Came across it after looking up Park Brige and found a link to you on the 'Fairbottom Bobs'. My family used to live a few hundrecyards from the site of the 'bobs'. My father was interested in industrial archealogy and woulds take me out on discovery walks all over the north of England, pointing out sites of interest etc. The 'bobs' was one of them. This would be in around 1970. When we last visited the site was owned by a small holder, who did not take to Dad and I clambering through the undergrowth to see the site of the old 'bobs', we got chased off with a few choice words on our ears. The whole place is pretty well cleaned up now and is part of a heritage site. Looks a bit antiseptic now, I prefer the fond memories of that day with my dad, industrial decay, and grime! cheers Marwill

Hi I really enjoyed your Ohio Scientific site! My first computer was Ohio Scientific Challenger 1P that I bought for US$350.00 in December 1979. I eventually added 4K of RAM ($50 - great price!) and wired in a GI sound chip. Those were that days! I still have an original copy of a circa 1979 Ohio Scientific computer product catalog if you are interested in scans of it. Thanks again for a trip down memory lane.

Hi Mark! Very good web site. As a railfan I am very interested in railway signals. Your explanations about the CROR and signals interpretation are very good. However, one thing got me confused. The signal aspect Red over Yellow, rule 426 IS USED by some railroads to indicate that the switch is aligned for the siding. This is the case for the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway. The railroad is hauling Ore concentrate and pellets from Labrador City, 260 miles from Sept-Iles, Quebec. QNS&L is using CTC since the beginning of it's operations in 1954. At that time, ore was shipped from Schefferville, 357 miles from Sept-Iles. My father worked there as a trainman, engineer and Trainmaster for 36 years. Trains loaded or empties, must be careful using turnouts and speed is restricted (15 mph). You can count up to 265 cars on a single train, which weights approx. 32 000 tons and is more than 2 miles in lenght. Single aspects dwarfs are placed at the end of the sidings, showing stop (red), clear to stop (yellow) or slow clear (green) indication. Patrick Sirois Rimouski, Quebec

I enjoyed your site. I was scanning the internet for more information on elevators and clicked on your link. I have been wanting to build an elevator in my home in Albuquerque and wanted to come up with a new way of building it. Your ideas give me ideas!! Keep up the good work!!! I guess some of my ideas and technology are outdated. I was thinking of using JK flip-flops for part of the circuit. I will read up on pic programming and go on from there. I am an avid fisherman and hope to try your part of the country one day. I really enjoyed your site. Thanks, Bob P.S. Spring is almost here and you need to take those kids fishing!

Hi,Back when I was fresh out of Technical school, I went to work for Tri-Comp Computers in Denver Colorado. I used to work on all of the OSI computers from the super board 2 to the C3-OEM wuth the 72 Meg Winchester Hard drive. We would troubleshoot to component level. We even memorized the memory test that we would have to key in to find the bad memory chip.. This site brings back very good memories for me. Thanks!

I have been WRACKING MY BRAINS for several years trying to remember what that thing was I saw in Aspen, Colorado in July of 1970. I hitchhiked in to town looking for old friends and psychedelic adventure. I had seen MusicVision in the Edmund Scientific catalog (who hadn't) but never saw one. I finally got my chance... I secured a bowl of unflavored yogurt and a handful of berries and nuts, and noticed that in a back room a private party was going on, centered around three CM and three HM "Motiondizers", and a cluster of hooded incandescent bulbs hooked up to color organs. The music was Pink Floyd and Sugarloaf. I drifted into the party room, ate my yogurt and tried to stay inconspicuous. The dark room improved on the feeble light effects and the presentation was actually cool. Cool enough for me to rummage around the 'net and get stuck in this site like flypaper. Thanx for reminding me, it was "MusicVision" and it was swell. Next stop: rewiring a black/white TV deflection yoke to accept stereo audio inputs. Dear Mark: Hope your vacation went well -- you are apparently my mentor in absentia for the Nitrogen-Laser project. The attached video is the progress that I've made on my Nitrogen Laser -- I don't understand laying an inductor between the rails, as this kills any spark that would go between them. Putting a 1-megohm resistor between the capacitor plates seems to allow it to still work, though, although it doesn't seem to have much effect in comparison to the non load-balanced setup. The video shows my output, and the photo shows the capacitor setup -- two 3-foot square caps powered by a 30kV DC computer-monitor HV-tap. Good stuff .. I run the American Antigravity site at http://www.americanantigravity.com -- I am hoping to link your plans on the site on a TEA Laser page, and show the results that I got by following them. Notice how my caps are "on end" with the rail-system between them. That seems to help with the size constraints (a 3-foot tall laser is better than a flat 6-foot long laser). The picture tube on my laser is 4.2 nanofarads, and the two 3-foot caps are 4.86 nanofarads -- I've measured them both together and got a combined capacitance of about 8.85 nanofarads (roughly). I'm having trouble getting the spark to travel evenly -- a buddy of mine has a commercial Nitrogen-Laser head (a former SDI project apparently), but I don't want to spend $200 bucks to buy his and then get stuck have to re-tune my caps and power-supply for it anyways (it has a large gap and very tall rail system). Best wishes! Tim Ventura

Hello, its nice to see some sites on signalling in Canada. I too worked for the CPR in the S&C. Please check my website above, you'll understand my interest in your site. I have implemented both ABS and CTC signalling systems with PIC systems and am currently designing a complex signalling system myself. Your information is quite good, however, I notice that you refer solely to the CROR and not the signalling rules that are used in a given area. Almost all signalling systems these days are CTC, especially so in your area of the country. Whether a system is CTC or ABS make a big difference in terms of how signals portray their information. For instance, 'A-board' signals are NOT used in CTC, only ABS. Once again, glad to see someone else with the bug!! Kevin Rudko P.S. I'm finishing my BSc. Elec.Eng. at the U of Alberta currently, hope to be finished at Christmas.

The projects and genius in that ISEF event are very impressive, so I tip my hat to you for being top of that formidable heap. I remember dancing to "She Blinded Me With Science" on the first night of the event. I knew I was a nerd for life at that moment. I got picked up by an underage Utah babe, then again I was only 17! LOL I am an environmental consultant/urban planner. Still creating, still close to science. Gotta run, be well science buddy! Oh, I have partied at Carleton U, I am an ACACIA brother and the chapter there is great. Canada is a big ole gem. Be well - Ron

IGBT,s increased the efficiency of the unit when I use it For inductive load. But I am running it on square wave oscillation Source because I am not a programmer and I don’t know How to program the PIC,s. I am having request that if u pleas send me one programmed PIC for 220 volts 50 HZ. For sure I will pay the charges for that. Your help appreciated. Regards.

Just Fascinating. I'll get to the rest of the site after a few comments: I stumbled across your site after previous fruitless searches and numerous laments about the lack of web material on the Superboard II- one of which I have. (It's surprising how many collectors don't have one and don't have it on their wish list. Maybe they're just not familiar with it?) Your Superboard article has inspired me to dig about in my storage locker for it and bring it back to life. (Now where can I get a copy of the operations booklet? And how would it be hooked up to a modern monitor, anyway?) I first purchased a Z-80 (or 81) but was so disappointed in the interference generated by it (this would vary depending upon how much pressure you applied to its top) that I returned it for a Superboard. What an improvement! And was I just flying when I upgraded to a mighty 8K. I used to get the Aardvark newsletter- I think it was from Aardvark- (they'd always have a small BASIC program to type in) and from that bought a soundboard kit that I never did install. I did have a lot of fun programming BASIC computer games. Peeks & pokes! (Hey, wait-a-minit... wasn't that the name of the newsletter?) Never figured out Hex- it looked like hieroglyphics. Relatives would ask me what you could do with computers... I would answer "anything!" although I really had no concept as to what that actually meant. Sure do wish I invested in a small company that came to my notice around that time or shortly after- Microsoft. I once built a crystal radio from a "tickler" galena crystal; coils; waxed paper/aluminum foil capacitors, etc. In another life I think I would have liked to have been some kind of electrical engineer. Instead, I am a video and film producer which was next in line after my other childhood fantasy job- astronaut. :-) Thanks for the trip down 8k memory lane. Cheers, Rob

Hello Mark, I'm very much interested in the courses at Niagara in respect to Photonics. Several years ago, (would you believe eight), I pick up a simple project book about optics and found it very stimulating. Unfortunatley as a programmer analyst and a lacking guidence this hobby was shelved. Switches and particularly senors are my keen interest. After touring the PRO website I located, Niagara College and found this web page. Can you point me to a location that details the courses Niagara offers? Also, I'd like to attend the Discovery Day, on the 10th and would like to know what campus would be apropriate - Photonics. thank you -James

I found your page (http://www.technology.niagarac.on.ca/people/mcsele/OhioScientific.html) through a search engine. I got a warm and fuzzy feeling as I went through the content. This is my first computer! The year was 1980. I learned my computer programming, BASIC, UVEPROM programming, machine code programming (in machine code!, i.e. in hex), hardware interfacing, etc. on this machined. One modification not mentioned in the page is the 48 column display modification. Thanks for giving its place in history.

I am intersted in talking to anyone who collects old 8-bit computers. I have a large supply of them, including several Apple clones, OSI, Commodore (Vic-20, C64, B128), Z-80 (CPM, TRS-80, Heath, etc.), TI, and several other brands. I also have a wall of documentaion, books, software, etc. I was a hobby software developer for 8-bit computers and now prefer to spend my hobby time composing music. I want to donate this lot of computers and documentation to someone who is interested in preserving the history and hardware of 8-bit computer technology. It seems that there should be a museum of computer technology somewhere in the USA/World. Contact me if you have any ideas/help on this subject.

Hello, I read with a lot of interest your paper: http://technology.niagarac.on.ca/people/mcsele/lasers/LasersTEA.htm I built a classical Nitrogen laser but getting Nitrogen, pump... all that is boring. I wonder if I can reach the same result with an air laser. On advantage of a air laser, compared with a normal Nitrogen laser is that we can build it only with aluminum plates, plastic films... all that is cheap and very easy to modify. In a Nitrogen laser, everything is glued, sealed and hard to modify which means hard to improve with the test and retry method... I'm very intersted in the /TEA-Ptel.jpg design, I have some questions about it: - have you any more info not on your Web page on it ? - when I look to TEA-PAtel.jpg, whole dimensions look like about 28x15cm, drawing indicates about 28x(14+8+...)= 28x25 cm, am I correct ? - why it uses a bent electrod on one side and a semi-cicular on the other side? Bent seems PK but with a semi-circular electrods, it seems that plasma position is not weel know and output laser beam may be poor ? - Is there a theory to optimize (even an order of magnitude) the air laser electrodes geometry ? (for example, having the same width at each output, or the same value for the 2 capacitors is probably not the best for optimization) - About TEA-air.jpg fig 1c, what is the glass tube used for ? - To save place (and perhaps speed ?), I wonder if anyone has tried to built such a laser with 2 // capacitors: I mean: a sort of common ground plate. Each side of this plate covered with plastic film and another plate (on each side) for each capacitor. > < | | | | | | | | | | | | | GND Then one side of this double capacitor is equipped with proper adjustable electrodes. Is there a problem with the ultra-fast discharge required? has anyone try it before ? Another problem with this laser (for amateur) is to measure average (or peak) power (to be able to increase it). Have you tried to install a little clear box filled with dye solution and installed between the laser output and a phototransistor connected to an oscilloscope ? A simple trick I found, realise a litle 1 tunr 10 mm diameter self, connect it to your oscilloscope and dispose it at about 50mm in the axis of the Blumlein self. We can safely see very interessant things on the scope. Of course, signal isn't stricly identical to the original one but it does worthwile to do the trick. Thank you for your answer Hubert SCIENCES POUR TOUS http://members.aol.com/hpspt/lasers.htm near NICE and Monaco, in the South-East of France

I was wondering if you had a picture or schematic of the power supply device you used for your NO2 laser. I have constructed a few of these lasers, but the power supply I am having a little trouble with. I was originally using a TV for the power supply (soldered a wire into the high voltage line on the back of the tube with a series of resistors inline after to slow down firing rate. But this is very large and dangerous Although it is nice being able to turn on your laser with a remote. Any information would be helpful... Thank you Josh

It is of profound satisfaction to be in the field of ones choice and then excel in it. I got my Ph. D. in Physics and worked on thin films (CeO2, V2O5, Nb2O5). But I could not get chance to work further in this field. Iwish if Icould enter the field again. When I see the courses offered inthis field I just want to register and enter the lab again.
